Olson was proud to contribute to the 2026 Curebound Cancer Challenge in support of participant Dave Heine, whose fundraising effort has now reached $7,500 for cancer research right here in San Diego.
What Is the Curebound Cancer Challenge?
If the name sounds familiar, it should. The Curebound Cancer Challenge is the evolution of Padres Pedal the Cause, San Diego’s signature community fundraising event for cancer research. Over the past decade, the event has raised more than $32.5 million and brought together thousands of riders, runners, walkers, and volunteers with a single goal: ending cancer.
The 2026 event took place on Saturday, August 1, at the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla, featuring coastal cycling routes along Torrey Pines, a family-friendly 5K, a 10K run, and spin and fitness classes — with cancer patients, survivors, researchers, and families all participating side by side.
What makes Curebound special is where the money goes. Every dollar raised funds collaborative cancer research at San Diego’s leading institutions, including UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, the Salk Institute, Scripps Research, and Rady Children’s. These grants provide seed funding that helps promising research secure much larger investments — turning early ideas into real breakthroughs in detection, treatment, and prevention.
Why This Cause Matters to Us
Few families in San Diego — or anywhere — have been untouched by cancer. Supporting riders like Dave Heine is a small way to stand behind the patients, survivors, doctors, and researchers working toward a future where a cancer diagnosis looks very different than it does today.
We also believe local generosity has a multiplier effect. When San Diegans fund San Diego research, the benefits stay in our community: world-class science, better care at local hospitals, and a stronger region for all of us.
